To be more specific, it's the ungood transfer quality and the slow
speed recording. In comparison, the Platinum slow speed VHS of Flying
Deuces is much better, actually "good", that I bought on the cheap,
like, six years ago.

For the knee-jerk anti-Flying Deuces brigade, I have to say that
the song Harvest Moon in Flying Deuces is my favite stan an ollie song,
that is, that I know about yet.

I don't get this, I see I have the VHS Swiss Miss and two of the VHS
shorts collections by Video Treasures that are normal speed and I
don't recall problems with the picture, but their A Chump At Oxford is a
silver rather than a golden brown box, has two "dunce" caps on front and
is slow speed and irritatingly splicy. I checked the catalog number on
the tape and box to see if someone did a switcheroo, but they match up.

Just where is this anti-Flying Deuces brigade?

When I conducted a survey in this newsgroup as to which is the best non-Roach
L&H film, Flying Deuces won unanimously.

i like flying deuces, possible because it's the first "full length" L&H film
i had ever seen. granted this was almost 40 years ago, and i have since
seen pretty much all the features. i like way out west better, but flying
deuces is a close second or third on my list.

I think almost all L&H fans like Flying Deuces.

I appreciated having it available in the public domain. (During a period in the
early 1980's, L&H films were rarely shown on any TV station where I lived, and
"Flying Deuces" was the only L&H film I could afford to buy and own on VHS. Back
then, standard VHS movies retailed at $80 each, while cheap public domain movies
were in the $10 - $15 range.)

However, the _main_ reason I like "Flying Deuces" is for the same reason I like
almost all L&H films: because it's funny.

Just where is the anti-Flying Deuces brigade that Walter Traprock mentioned??? I
have not seen hide nor hair of it.

As I recall, there's one guy who posts here who hates the film. I
don't think he likes anybody who likes the film, either. Which means
if you ask him about me, he'll respond in his best Jean Hagen voice,
"And I can't stand 'im."

I think it permeates from the FOX flame wars that
periodically inflame around here.
(Alright, I confess. Wars that I help incite)

There are a small group of unhumorous so-called
fans of the Boys that are convinced that the FOX
films are so underrated (even disregarding that the
past 60 yrs since there have been made no major
critic or writer who has endorsed them wholeheartedly)
that they are even more entertaining that the Roach
films. To prove their point they like to say that they
are at least as funny as "The Flying Deuces."

This I believe is the origin to the 'Anti-Flying Deuces Brigade.'

Let the crying commence,

Gary J.

I suppose it's just Jim Neibohr who hates the film. And I guess I got
confused between a "brigade" and a "one man army".

It's Jim Neibaur. And he has been absent from this group for several months now.
(I think he switched to a different internet company that doesn't have usenet
access.)

Jim ranks Flying Deuces as one of L&H's weakest, but he _never_ said he "hates"
it. He frequently stated that there are no "bad" L&H films. Neibaur has always
acknowledged that FD is way better than contemporary piss-and-fart comedies.

While many L&H fans have recognized the merit in the post-1940 L&H films, only
_one_ spaced-out individual has been brazen enough to say they're better than
the Roach films. This same individual holds the opinion that it is "extremely
important" to colorize all of L&H's silent films.

You ever get the impression that said individual (Bass Guitar God aka
Space Boss aka Dr. Smith of "Lost In Space") is playing a "character,"
just to stir things up? I do.

Have you noticed that Space Boss disappeared at about the same time as
Jim Neibaur, and that this happened right after Mel Gibson's widely
reported drunken slurs? Does anyone actually believe these were just
coincidences?

That's the kind of off-the-wall theory that Space Boss specializes in!

Actually, Space Boss is still here, although not as frequently as he used to be.
