I was pleasantly surprised to find two clips on interest to all Laurel
& Hardy fans on the new 3-disc JAZZ SINGER collection.

1. "Hollywood Handicap", a one-reel MGM short directed by Buster
Keaton and featuring a short candid clip of Oliver Hardy at Santa
Anita racetrack.

2. Hidden on Disc 2 is the complete Technicolor ballet sequence from
THE ROGUE SONG! Simply select GOLD DIGGERS OF BROADWAY on the main
menu, then select FINALE.

Always nice to find any little bits like this!

And a closer Laurel & Hardy connection to THE JAZZ SINGER is Otto
Lederer. Otto plays Moshe Yudelson in THE JAZZ SINGER, and also plays the
conductor in YOU'RE DARN TOOTIN' from the same year. One of my favorite L&H
shorts. Even though the conductor is not specifically Jewish, Yudelson
engages in the same Jewish mugging as he does in Jazz Singer. I've never
seen any of his other work so maybe that was his typical schtick.
The word on the new release of THE JAZZ SINGER is that the restoration
has the film looking and sounding better than it has on any previous
release.

Wow -- these are indeed L&H rarities. Thanks for the tip!

Are these items both on Disc 2?

Supposedly, that "Rogue Song" clip is a mistake, which is why you have
to choose the Gold Diggers of Broadway to see it. I don't know how a
big company like Warner's could do that and not notice. In any event,
it's probably a good idea to pick up a copy soon, in case they decide
to correct the error and replace the DVD.

Maybe they made a mistake "on purpose." ;)
