THE HOOSE-GOW was released without background music, but it does have
music at the beginning and end.
It starts with "That's My Weakness Now" (Stept - Green). This is
followed by three seconds of another tune which is abruptly cut off by
the sound of a horn.
Question: does anybody know which tune this is? It sound to me like it
was lifted from an earlier music track, perhaps from one of the
silents, but I cannot place it.

The title music is lifted from the VITAPHONE track that was created
for WE FAW DOWN. That track was considered missing for years. If you
get the German Kinowelt DVD of SONS OF THE DESERT, they offer WE FAW
DOWN as a bonus and it has the original VITAPHONE track restored.

As for what the tune just following "That's My Weakness, Now", I can't
say. I don't recognize it...perhaps someone with a good ear (or access
to Roach Music Dep't. Cue Sheets) can identify it.

Ha! The tune is "Ambling Along" by William Axt.
It turns out that I knew this in 2001 but had forgotten it by 2008...
See Bram Reijnhoudt's message in this thread.

On June 19, 2001-Bram Reijnhoudt wrote the following for this
newsgroup

I consulted Piet Schreuders on this matter and he confirms that the
Kinowelt-DVD-version of WE FAW DOWN does have the original Vitaphone
soundtrack. Evidently the reel 1 disk surfaced sometime after
1994/95,
when only the reel 2 track was known to exist.
At that time Piet made two tracks for the German L&H/Hal Roach
copyright holder (Kirch Group): one with the Beau Hunk music and the
other one using the Vitaphone reel 2 track (for both reels). The BH
version was chosen for release on VHS.
He checked the new German DVD-version with the original cue sheet
from
April 1929 and told me that it is indeed the original music and
effects track, from
start to finish. This track is of special interest because whoever
compiled it made a real effort to an effective filmscore, using a
medley of well-know songs of the period.
All numbers were chosen on the basis of their title: "That's My
Weakness Now", "Cheatin' On Me", "Gold Diggers", "Whoopee",
"Somebody's Wrong", "It All Depends on You", "That's a Lot of Bunk".
These titles more or less tel the story of the film. They are linked
together with mood music like "Scherzando-Hurry" illustrating a
chase,
"Sailing Sailng" when the boys fall into a puddle, "Fire Agitato" for
the fire. At the telephone call ("Hello, BOSS!") we get "Comic
Conversation' by a certain Aborn. Piet suggests he might have been
the
arranger of the soundtrack.
Music and sound effects were recorded in the Victor-studio in Camden,
New Jersey.

The original arranger would have to be Roy Shields. He worked for
Victor Records when he was sent out to the Roach Studio in 1929 to
help out arranging soundtracks for all of the Roach releases. Before
he started composing his own tunes that we are all familar with
Shields filled the Roach shorts using Victor records.
