Creating Back-Ups for the Universal L&H DVDs

Guys-

I'm trying to make back-ups of several parts from the big UK set and
am having a problem. My goal is to eliminate those horrid colorized
versions and the silent films that have been issued in beautiful
prints through the "Lost Films" series. By cutting those, I should be
able to make exceptionally high quality back-ups, since it would cut
the source material by more than half.

I'm using the lastest version of 123 COPY DVD '08. I finally figured
out the Custom Setting, but when I try to use it, the whole program
shuts down. The selection process is hit-and-miss with these discs.
There are no actual titles like, "Chickens Comer Home" listed. You
just get weird codes. Careful counting down the options list helps,
but it's not a lock.

MagicDVD has a better layout and is easier to use, but it fails about
25% of the time. The very best product I use is Record Now, but it
won't fly with copy-protected discs.

Yeah, I've tried the online forum. Those tech guys have a language all
their own, and I'm just a poor American boy who only ever learned
English. And I can screw THAT up pretty badly at times.

Any advice would be most welcome!

My suggestion would be to use the free software DVD Shrink. It will
eliminate the region and CSS coding, as well as delete portions of the
disk you don't want. You will still have to figure out what each piece
is though, as no titles are generally there. It does give you
thumbnails though.

Thanks for the link! I'll give it a shot tomorrow late afternoon if
time allows. I haven't read the info on the site, but I've bookmarked
it.

Have you used it yourself? The region coding isn't an issue for either
123CopyDVD'08 or MagicDVD. It does come into play with Record Now
(still the BEST for creating backups of non copy protected R1 DVDs
with a running time of under 80 minutes, all CDs, and all CD-ROMs, in
my opinion).

Anyone else want to chime in with ideas? Thanks again, Derek!

For some strange reason my ISP's news server didn't pick this up - I had
to discover it on Google groups. Yes, I've used it, and it works very
well. I've never had any failures of any kind. From what I've seen in a
google search, the other two you mentioned do. I see no advantage to
paying money for software when the freeware version works equally well.

Well, I tried it. It didn't work very well for me. For some reason,
the software just keeps having arguments with my burner. Plus, there's
an odd wrinkle to the story. Apparently, I'm allowed to change regions
on this computer four times. On the fifth change, it becomes
permanent. Weird, huh? I've never heard of that one before.

I guess 123COPY has some way of doing episodic copying. I can't find
it, but it's there somewhere. I'll keep digging.

Thanks again for the info!
