L&H reference in Blazing Saddles

Blazing Saddles is one of my favorite movies. A few days ago, I noticed
*for the first time* that there's a reference to L&H in it. While waiting
for the new sheriff to arrive, John Hillerman's character -- who's holding a
laurel wreath -- rehearses his welcoming speech, as follows:

"As chairman of the welcoming committee, it is my honor to extend to you
a laurel, and hardy handshake."

I have no idea how I managed to miss it all these years.

Remarkably few people catch the Laurel and Hardy reference in BLAZING
SADDLES. I noticed it the first time I saw it. What a fun movie!

I don't know why a lot of people miss it. Hillerman's delivery of that line is
almost like a wink and a nudge to highlight it. I caught it the first time,
too.

BLAZING SADDLES is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I nearly lost my
breath laughing a few times. :)

I noticed the L&H reference also. I must say this before someone else does:
Blazing Saddles is possibly the second-funniest western comedy film ever made.
The #1 funniest western comedy film of all time is, of course, "Way Out West."

Some might cite Bob Hope's "The Paleface" as worthy of honorable mention, but
personally I would not.

IMHO, any list of great comedy western films would include the following short
animated cartoons: "Bugs Bunny Rides Again," "Drip-Along Daffy," "Homesteader
Droopy," and "Drag-along Droopy."

I do agree, "Blazing Saddles" is hilarious. And I never caught the L&H
reference! Gotta check that out... Other great silly Westerns: "Support
Your Local Gunfighter" and "Support Your Local Sheriff," both with
James Garner, are great. They're on TCM from time to time. "Along Came
Jones" (1945), with Gary Cooper and Loretta Young, is very funny. (The
only movie Coop ever produced.)

The sequel "Son of Paleface" is a lot funnier
and ranks high on my list of western comedies.
