Two men running a moving company have to get a large piano up a daunting
flight of stairs.
The plots as described never sound like anything worth watching, do
they? Jeez, just think about the creativity involved in a film like
that! Start with a simple, uncomplicated, mundane premise, then start
working on gags. Or, are the gags already in Stan's head and he now
needs a plot to hang them on? Either way, it's quite a baffling thing
to consider....

Yeah...so? And I think we can all agree that as dull as that sounds,
the finished product is one of the funniest half-hours in the history
of entertainment. As the late Tom Snyder would say, "You wonder what
goes through their minds."

You think that's bad? Here are some genuine TV GUIDE synopses (vintage
1960-65) of Laurel and Hardy films:

PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES
The Slow Burn and The Grin by accident join the Army.

WAY OUT WEST
Laurel & Hardy deliver a deed to the wrong person, then
proceed to set things right.

SAPS AT SEA
Laurel & Hardy match half-wits with a thug.

GREAT GUNS
A pair of zanies decide to enlist in the cavalry.

JITTERBUGS
Laurel & Hardy get involved with a con man.

And for the all-time "Not Only Dull But Stupid" award, I submit for your
approval the official 1963 Chicago Tribune "TV Week"
synopsis of SONS OF THE DESERT:

Laurel & Hardy are off on an adventure in Arabia.

"The Slow Burn and The Grin..." is a close 2nd for the award.. The only
excuse is there was no quick lookup on the Internet back then. Now I
feel like looking through all my old TV Guides :)
