Thought I'd tap the vast experise of the gentlemen and ladies gathered
here...

Anyone have any idea where one can track down the George Pal Puppetoons,
the classic stop-motion animation shorts from the '30s and'40s?

I don't mean THE PUPPETOON MOVIE, or the handful of titles that have
been available for years...

But the vast bulk of the Paramount shorts that HAVEN'T been released.

(There's one collector in New York who has almost the complete run, in
BLACK AND WHITE television prints, from the '60s, but he refuses, for
the most part, to let anyone even see this.)

Any help on this would be appreciated, and you can contact me, off list.

Thanks!

Best, Jim

The DVD of THE PUPPETOON MOVIE has 12 complete Puppetoons as a bonus -
totally intact, with credits:

2. Bravo, Mr. Strauss (1943)
3. Olio for Jasper (1946)
4. Phillips Cavalcade (1939?) for Phillips Radio
5. Jasper's Derby (1946)
6. Hoola Boola (1938?)
7. Ether Symphony (1936)
8. Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp (1936)
9. The Magic Atlas (1935) for Phillips
10. Jasper and the Haunted House (1942)
11. The Big Broadcast of '38 (1937) for Phillips
12. Ether Ship (1934) for Phillips

Hey Jim --

I, too, would like to find more than I have managed to get my hands
on. I do know WPWR-Channel 50 in Chicago was running them back in the
1980s -- they were part of a package that included the pre-1950
Paramount cartoons including most of the Fleischer stuff (non-Popeye
and non-Superman) and the pre-Harvey Famous Studios shorts, as well as
the redrawn colorized Betty Boops. Later, I think AMC had the same
package but they had the Boops in the original B&W. They'd throw on
one of the shorts as filler between movies every now and then, and I
definitely did see at least one or two of the Puppetoons on there, but
that's a long time ago.

Best source out there seems to be the extras on the Puppetoon movie
DVD, listed earlier in this thread. If it's of any help to you at all,
there are a couple of additional titles on the recent "Giant 600
Cartoon Collection" magaset released through Mill Creek (which has a
lot of interesting stuff on it -- several full episodes of "Calvin And
The Colonel" with original commercials in B&W, some Hoppity Hooper
shorts duped from a bootleg internet set, etc. alongside the usual
suspects).

On the 600 cartoons set there are a handful of shorts -- some are
duplicated in better quality on the Puppetoon Movie DVD, but at least
a couple are not. They include:

Mr. Strauss Takes A Walk
Date With Duke (Duke Ellington)
Ship Of The Ether, The
Tubby The Tuba
Tulips Shall Grow

Hope that helps...I have seen this set at Wal-Mart for $9.99, and at
other places for more...I even saw a version in a metal box with a
book for something like $34.99. If you can get it for ten bucks, it's
definitely worth having.

I know, not much help, but it's something.

A great memory for me was about 35 years ago, a Pacific Film Archive (I
think) event in Berkeley, an evening of Puppetoons in original 35mm
Technicolor prints from Pal's personal library.
