A pleasant surprise at Costco today. They had the 12-DVD Columbia
shorts collection at Costco today for $89.99... NOT BAD.. Here are the
DVD's included:

STOP! LOOK! AND LAUGH!
THE OUTLAWS IS COMING
G.I. STOOGE
COPS AND ROBBERS
THREE SMART SAPS
HEAALTHY, WEALTHY AND DUMB
DIZZY DOCTORS
MERRY MAVERICKS
NUTTY BUT NICE
SPOOK LOUDER
ALL THE WORLD'S A STOOGE
CURLY CLASSICS

Most of the DVD's contain Six shorts. One thing I've learned about
Costco is that when you see something, you gotta grab it, as once a
DVD set disappears from the shelves, it's unlikely to come back.

Good luck. Just wanted to give a "heads up" in case anybody was
looking for these.

Any idea if/when the entire portfolio will be released on DVD?

Starting in October they are going to releasing all the shorts in
chronological order. The Oct. set will have all the shorts from 1934,

A good idea, but way too late. They missed out on an opportunity to
make lots of money off of me, as I have managed to fill in all but 5
of the shorts from the existing DVDs, DVD-R dubs of the commercial
VHS's, and DVD-R dubs of commerical free shorts on WSBK (Boston
superstation). I'm sure I'll end up with the missing 5 sooner or later.

Well, I'm not a big Stooges fan, but I'll pick up the official Sony
releases, so long as they're not colorized (and they're not, from
reports). According to a Sony rep, they'll also contain bonus Columbia
shorts, such as the Shemp and Joe Besser solo 2-reelers.

I hate when a company releases a "12 DVD Set" and it only has 6 episodes per
disk.

I am sure you can cram more than 6 onto a disk.

Brisco County was like that...4 episodes per disk total of 8 discs, but at
least they were 45 minute episodes.

It's a matter of money. Music CD tracks often total under half the time a CD
can accommodate, sometimes even as little as a third.

The more you cram onto a disc, the lower the picture quality. Around 2
hours is usually a good balance between picture quality and playing time.

Can anyone tell me the name of the last Curly short, the one where he
got sick during the filming?

Also, what is the short later on where Curly appears in a "cameo" as a
passenger on a plane?

After Curly's recovery, why didn't he return to the team?

Thanks.

That would be "Half-Wits Holiday" (1947).

Curly's cameo was in "Hold That Lion" (1947), and he was a train passenger.
Post by The Space Boss
After Curly's recovery, why didn't he return to the team?
Curly never recovered enough to perform again. The stroke had slowed
down his delivery to the point where he wasn't funny. Undoubtedly, if
Curly could make children laugh again, he would have done it.

That's because (don't make me say it), Columbia is a Half-Wit.

I noticed that Curly does not appear at all during the pie fight finalé, so
apparently it was shot in sequence.

FWIW, "Half Wit's Holiday" was a remake of one of the first Stooges films for
Columbia, "Hoi Polloi." It was later remade with Joe Besser as "Pies and Guys".
Oddly, the original did not have a pie fight.

You correct, but there are a few factors.
the stooges are in black n white and the sound is mono.

High Def is not a requirement here.

Also with the right software you can can get good quality video and audio
using a high compression rate.

I have downloaded a bootleg DVD that someone created that contained Bourne
Identity, Bourne Supremecy and Pitch Black. All movies in 480X480 and in
surround sound.

Some people thought the 6-hour speed on VHS recorders was just fine, too.

It is a lot better than highly data compressed stuff watched on a 'puter,
even home recorded 6-hour speed VHS! Commercial VHS at 6 hour speed is
even better, much better, but doesn't keep me from being pissed at
commercial VHS's at the 6-hour speed!, for example, Platinum's VHS of
Flying Deuces, Video Treasures Saps At Sea, Kentucky Fried Movie, etc.
Worse, for today, is 4-hour speed VHS, like the first Neighbors (1981)
release by Goodtimes (the tri-star re-release of 1993 or so is far
better, at proper LP speed.)

How would you know, if you only watched what you downloaded to the
computer, from the computer. A commercial DVD is, like, 4-8 Gigabytes,
and I'll bet your download was a lot smaller than that. Also,
commercial compression is better, usually, than home compression,
for quality.

Please, Im not too video illiterate.
I did not watch it on my pooter. I watched it on my 37" CRT TV....yes its
low res, but I go back to one of my earlier points, The Stooges were never
in high quality to begin with. As Butthead once said "You cant polish a turd
Beavis".

As for commercial compression being the best...BS!
There are orgs and people deticated to video creation and editing. They can
conjur up some crazy various audio/video compression to make some qual. I
wish there was a URL that I could link to the creators of some of these 3 in
1 DVDs.

again I return to one of my earlier points.

I hate when you buy a DVD set and they barely put any content per disc.
Thye spread it out so that they can over charge you.

I did not mean to offend you Stooge Fans by referencing a DVD that is not
even out yet. Please settle down.

==================================================

Absolutely untrue. Original 35mm prints of Three Stooges shorts look
absolutely splendid. Until you've seen a close-up of Curly in this very
hi-res format, you haven't really experienced them at all!

Some of their late '30s sorts were photographed by the great Lucien
Ballard, who'd started out working with Josef von Sternberg. These
films would certainly benefit from a hi-def transfer, as has already
been demonstrated with films from the same era such as CASABLANCA.

Considering that the color versions of the Fleischer Popeyes were not mere
colorizations but actual destructions of the originals, I would guess you
are.

Not quite. There is also the Space Boss, king of multiple exclamation
points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you count fictional characters, a poster named Super Stupid thinks
colorization is great. (The real person behind "Super Stupid", whoever he/she
is, probably despises the idiocy of colorization as much as the rest of us, and
uses a fictional persona to illustrate his/her point.)
