The Cameraman (& Big Business)

There are precious few silent films still available in celluloid, but
we have managed to locate a print of this Buster Keaton comedy from the
tail-end of the silent era. Keaton falls for a pretty girl who works at a
film studio and sets out to impress her with his film-making talents. The
Laurel and Hardy short, another rarity, is about two Christmas tree
salesmen. Both will be with live accompaniment by Leo Solomon, back by
request!

By Charles Ladbrook
JAZZ pianist Leo Solomon will accompany the screening of two classic silent
comedies by Louth Film Club on Monday April 14.
Last year the club showed two Buster Keaton films with live music from Leo
and received many requests to put on another silent-movies-with-music night.
Monday's films will be another Keaton, one of his later great feature length
comedies, and a pre talkies Laurel & Hardy short, Big Business.
In The Cameraman, plays a street photographer who falls for a pretty girl
working in a film studio and sets out to impress her by becoming a newsreel
cameraman.
As a romantic comedy it is possibly his greatest film, whilst there's still
no shortage of his wonderful visual gags.
In Big Business, Stan and Ollie are at their knockabout, havoc-wreaking best
as two Christmas tree salesmen.
The Cameraman and Big Business, both Certificate U, will be shown in Screen
One at Louth's Playhouse Cinema, starting at 7.30pm.
* Louth Film Club's programme for 2008/9 and details of membership are
available from Off The Beaten Tracks record shop in Aswell Street, Louth, or
at the cinema.
