Future brighter for Raymond Theatre

Things continue to look up for the Raymond Theatre.
It's fate is still under consideration by the Raymond City Council,
and Rebecca Watson, who manages the city-owned theater along with her
husband, Frank, expects a final decision in July over whether the theater
will stay open.
After reviewing the city's budget and the theater's expenses at a
meeting on Wednesday, she said things look promising.
"Right now, it's looking good," she said. "We're hopeful, anyway. It
looks like the theater can be open at least next year as long as the city
approves it. I'm excited. I want us to stay open so bad."
The historic theater, which opened in 1928 and houses a cinema,
regional performances and some special events, had been losing money for
some time. It was scheduled to be shut down March 31.
The council voted April 16 to allow the theater to remain open for
three months while community activists and the Watsons worked to bring in
money through community donations and several benefits.
On July 16, the council's finance committee will revisit the issue to
assess the theater's prospects for running in the black.
Watson has also expanded the cinema to include some weekday showings
and hopes to show movies every day this summer. She has booked one of summer's
most anticipated movies, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," and is
planning a midnight showing when it opens on July 11. Presales for the
showing will start July 9.
Also, the theater now has its own Web site that includes an event
schedule at www.raymondtheater.com.
Two fundraising events
(snipped)
Raymond's Lady Elks and the 4-H Club will host a "Silent Movie and
Dinner" night on July 1 at the theater. It will feature Andy Crow on the
Wurlitzer organ and Laurel and Hardy shorts "Double Whoopee," "Angora Love"
and "Sugar Daddies."
Attendees can have dinner at either 2 p.m. or 6 p.m. The movie is at 4
p.m. The Lady Elks plan to prepare roast beef, mashed potatoes, vegetables,
desserts and beverages.
Tickets are $22 for adults and $10 for those 12 and under and are
available at the Raymond Elks Lodge and at the theater.
Proceeds from both events benefit the theater.
Watson is also looking for any sound equipment for live entertainment
people are willing to donate, such as speakers and PA systems.
